Curatorial Note

Written by Valmiki, the Ramayana that heads back to the 5th century BC, is an ancient Indian epic that narrates the life of lord Rama, his wife Sita and his brother Lakshmana as they set for an exile of 14 years. Beginning from Rama's exile and abduction of Sita by the demon king Ravana to the battle between Rama and Ravana and how the later gets defeated with the help of the army of the monkeys led by lord Hanuman, the Ramayana includes all the major incidents that took place in the life of lord Rama. It has made a significant mark in Indian culture, literature and philosophy and has served as a timeless tale of love, honor and triumph of good over evil.

The Ramayana has taken different theatrical forms in different parts of the world, each having its own flavor. The importance they hold lies in the fact that they preserve and promote traditional culture,ethical teachings and other virtues of life. The dramatic portrayal of Ramayana helps people connect easily to the past that brings with it the traditional essence of the history in the modern day world.

Throne of Ayodhya

Ayodhya was the capital of Kosala kingdom, situated on the banks of Sarayu River. Kosala was ruled by King Dasharatha and was succeeded by Rama. 

Throne of Kishkindha

Kishkindha was the kingdom of vanaras, and was ruled initially by Bali. It was succeeded by Sugriva after Rama killed Bali. The whole region was within the dense Dandaka Forest.

Lanka was the kingdom of demon king Ravana. Lanka is currently known by the name Sri Lanka. Vibhishana was made the king of Lanka after Rama killed Ravana in war with Rama.
